Rachel

Aiden has his unwavering gaze on the side of my face because I do not dare to look at him. He says nothing; he never says anything when he wants answers from me, his laser beam eyes do the work. He will stare at me until I am forced to spill the words.

I wonder if it is just me. It is enough that I am feeling guilty, without spoiling the happy mood with my gloom. I take a deep breath like there is about to be no air in the world, gathering the courage to share the news that has been weighing on my heart.

This is not an easy conversation, but it needs to happen anyway and I am expecting the worst, like tantrums and anger from Aiden. As always, it is for the best.

“Aiden,” I begin, my voice barely above a whisper, “I’m moving away.” I am too much of a coward to look at him. I can feel his eyes on my face, searching for answers.

“Where are you moving to? Where are you going to, Rachel?” he asks, his voice tinged a little with concern. “Look at me, Rachel.” He pulls my face toward him so my eyes will meet his gaze, my heart aching at the thought of what I’m about to say.

“I’m moving away,” I repeat, my voice trembling slightly.

Confusion clouds his face as he asks, “But why? Why are you moving away?”

From the cozy nest of the couch, he unfolds from his relaxed position and uses a gentle push to propel him upright, as if he wants to hear me well. He may hate me for what I am about to say.

Lumps form on the walls of my throat and my tongue becomes heavy as I struggle to find the right words.

“I’m getting married,” I finally admit, my voice barely audible.

Aiden’s eyes widen in shock, his eyes betraying a flicker of disbelief which tugs at the corner of his mouth and flings them open. The news hits him like a bolt of lightning, and I catch a glimpse of the hurt in his eyes.

I quickly add, “Tyler proposed to me before George and Katy’s wedding. I said yes.”

“What—?” He babbles, the words hanging somewhere between his teeth and tongue.

I snatch words from him and say it all at once, my every sentence following each other before he can say a thing. “We are getting married a month from now and we are leaving our place as soon as we do.”

I read from his face that he wants to ask if I am leaving because of him.

“I didn’t bring up the idea but I agreed to it because it is the best for us,” I drop my head to look down and play with my fingers, “at least if we are very far apart, we will not have any excuse to… do what we do.”

“Is that why you fucked the shit out of me?” I raise my head sharply to see him smiling like he wasn’t just speechless about a second ago.
